Fantastic Universe, published from the mid to late 1950's, was a pulp magazine devoted to science fiction. It published work by science fiction greats Arthur Clark, Philip Dick and Ray Bradbury among others. Science fiction's popularity in the 1950's was partly a result of post-nuclear apocalyptic fears which arose in the wake of World War II. In this new climate, man's ability to destroy his own world by nuclear holocaust could potentially strike the attention of interstellar or interplanetary warriors like those shown in this cover drawing as they plot to invade earth. These fictitious creatures, both godlike and horrible at the same time, are shown as both ageless and sexless, a natural result of their superhuman qualities.
